Apple Bread Pudding (Gramma’s Recipe)

A warm, comforting apple bread pudding made with tender apples, bread, and a rich custard, based on a classic family recipe.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups day-old bread cubes
  • 2 cups peeled and chopped apples
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish.
  2. Place bread cubes and chopped apples into the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, melted butter, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
  4. Pour custard mixture evenly over the bread and apples, gently pressing down to ensure the bread soaks up the liquid.
  5. Let rest for 10–15 minutes to absorb.
  6. Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until golden brown and set in the center.
  7. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving warm.

Notes

  • Best served warm with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, or caramel sauce.
  • You can substitute raisins or walnuts for extra flavor and texture.
  • Use slightly stale bread for the best texture.
