Apple Pie with Streusel or Top Crust

A classic apple pie filled with tender, spiced apples and topped with either a buttery streusel crumble or a traditional flaky top crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
  • For Streusel Topping: 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • Optional Top Crust: 1 additional 9-inch pie crust

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Mix well to coat the apples.
  3. Place the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust and dot with butter.
  4. If using streusel topping, combine flour and brown sugar in a small bowl. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly, then sprinkle evenly over apples.
  5. If using a top crust, place the crust over the apples, trim excess, seal edges, and cut small slits for steam to escape.
  6. Bake for 45–55 minutes, until apples are tender and topping or crust is golden brown.
  7. Cool slightly before serving to allow filling to set.

Notes

  • Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix of apples work best for balance of tartness and sweetness.
  • To prevent crust over-browning, cover edges with foil during baking.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • Streusel topping gives a sweeter, crunchier texture, while a top crust offers a more classic presentation.
