- 2 cups water
- 2 black tea bags or 2 tsp loose black tea
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 4 cardamom pods, lightly crushed
- 4 whole cloves
- 1-inch piece fresh ginger, sliced
- 1/2 tsp black peppercorns
- 2 cups milk (dairy or plant-based)
- 2 tbsp sugar or to taste
- In a saucepan, bring the water, cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, cloves, ginger, and peppercorns to a boil.
- Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes to let the spices infuse.
- Add the black tea and simmer for another 2–3 minutes.
- Stir in the milk and sugar, then bring back to a gentle boil.
- Remove from heat and strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into mugs.
- Serve hot and enjoy.
Notes
- You can adjust the sugar to your taste or use a sugar substitute.
- Try adding star anise or nutmeg for additional depth of flavor.
- For a frothier chai latte, use a milk frother before serving.
