Cinnamon Horchata

A refreshing and creamy traditional Mexican beverage made with rice, flavored with cinnamon and sweetened to perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup long grain white rice
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 cup milk (or almond milk for dairy-free)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Ice for serving
  • Ground cinnamon for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a blender, combine the rinsed rice, 2 cups of water, and cinnamon sticks. Blend for 1-2 minutes until the rice and cinnamon are roughly ground.
  3. Transfer the mixture to a bowl or container and add the remaining 2 cups of water. Cover and let it soak at room temperature for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  4. After soaking, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a pitcher to remove the solids.
  5. Stir in the milk, sugar, and vanilla extract until well combined and the sugar is dissolved.
  6. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
  7. Serve over ice and garnish with ground cinnamon if desired.

Notes

  • For a vegan version, use plant-based milk like almond or oat milk.
  • Adjust sweetness according to your taste.
  • Blending the rice helps release more flavor and creaminess.
