Crystal Sugar Cookie Shards

These crystal sugar cookie shards are thin, crisp, and sparkly cookies that resemble edible glass. They make a beautiful decorative treat for parties or holiday displays.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 12 tablespoons milk (as needed)
  • 1/2 cup coarse sparkling sugar or sanding sugar (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until combined. Add milk if the dough seems too dry.
  6. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/8 inch thickness.
  7. Sprinkle the top generously with coarse sugar, pressing lightly into the dough.
  8. Cut the dough into irregular shard-like shapes with a knife or pizza cutter.
  9. Place the shards on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 8–10 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
  10. Cool completely on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

  • For extra sparkle, use a mix of colored sanding sugars.
  • These cookies can be used as edible decorations for cakes and desserts.
  • Store in an airtight container to maintain crispness.
