Rainbow Bagels with Cream Cheese

Colorful and fun rainbow bagels, perfect for a cheerful breakfast or brunch, served with classic cream cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • Food coloring (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil (for greasing)
  • Water for boiling
  • 1 tbsp honey (optional, for boiling water)
  • Cream cheese, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour and salt. Mix and knead until a smooth dough forms, about 8–10 minutes.
  3. Divide dough into six equal portions. Add a different food coloring to each portion and knead until the color is well incorporated.
  4. Roll each colored dough into ropes and stack them together. Twist and fold into a rainbow pattern. Divide into individual portions and shape into bagels.
  5. Let bagels rest on a greased baking sheet for 20–30 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add honey if using. Boil bagels 1 minute per side, then remove and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 20–25 minutes until cooked through and slightly golden.
  9. Cool slightly before serving with cream cheese.

Notes

  • Use gel food coloring for more vibrant colors without altering the dough consistency.
  • You can flavor the cream cheese with honey, herbs, or fruit for a twist.
  • Boiling the bagels gives them their classic chewy texture.
