- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- 1/2 cup water or beef broth
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- 6 hamburger buns
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
- Add the onion, green pepper, and garlic, cooking until softened, about 3–4 minutes.
- Drain excess grease if necessary.
- Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, and water or broth.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve hot on hamburger buns.
Notes
- You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for beef.
- For extra flavor, add a dash of hot sauce or smoked paprika.
- Toast the buns for a sturdier sandwich.
