Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes are a classic American comfort food made with ground beef simmered in a tangy, slightly sweet tomato-based sauce, served on soft hamburger buns.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1/2 cup water or beef broth
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 6 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
  2. Add the onion, green pepper, and garlic, cooking until softened, about 3–4 minutes.
  3. Drain excess grease if necessary.
  4. Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, and water or broth.
  5. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Serve hot on hamburger buns.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for beef.
  • For extra flavor, add a dash of hot sauce or smoked paprika.
  • Toast the buns for a sturdier sandwich.
