Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (for ganache)
  • 1 cup dark chocolate (chopped, for ganache)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate fudge sauce (for layering)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and beat until well combined.
  4. Stir in boiling water until the batter is thin and smooth.
  5. Fold in chocolate chips.
  6. Divide batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.
  8. For the ganache, heat heavy cream until simmering, then pour over chopped dark chocolate. Let sit for 5 minutes, then stir until smooth.
  9. To assemble, place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread chocolate fudge sauce on top, then add the second cake layer.
  10. Pour ganache over the top and sides of the cake, letting it drip slightly. Chill for 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use high-quality cocoa and chocolate for best flavor.
  • The cake layers can be made a day ahead and stored in the refrigerator.
